Sunday, Oct. 5, Jason and Denise Doerhoff hosted a birthday party for their 2-year-old son Declan. The party was held at GRIFF’S R.V. park club house near Altoona. Declan has the distinction of having seven grandmothers and five were at the party, including Great-Grandma Connie Neese and grandparents Kate and Rob Doerhoff. The theme was “Scooby Do,” complete with big brother Leland, who is 4, to help with the candles on the Scooby cake and gifts.
Bailey Ovenshire, daughter of David and Barbara Neese Ovenshire, is in Fort Sill, OK, attending Army basic training and “loves it!” She has marched 12 miles in full gear, in pouring down rain, scaled a 60 ft. tower, lobbed grenades and was told she smiles too much. It’s been quite an experience to date. She will graduate and move on to Fort Sam Huston in Texas for more training.
Dale and Nancy Hanaman visited their daughter and family, Sarah and Benji Pearson, Steven, Elizabeth and Andrea in Superior, WI. The colder weather interfered with their outdoor painting plans. They traveled on to Rice Lake, WI, to see Matthew, Adrianna and Adyara Hanaman and to attend a soccer game of Adyara’s. No snow, but a bit chilly.
Virgene Morse enjoyed having her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Delores, Kevin and Kelsey Blanshan visit on Saturday and Sunday. The visits usually include working, either in the house or outside, but it was a nice weekend to get some work done.
Sunday, Oct. 12, Jean Borgeson joined Phil and Toni Roberts on an excursion to Winterset to visit Tony and Wendy Burkett and daughters Josie, Addie and Lilly. The two older girls and Holly, the dog, were getting ready to participate in the Covered Bridge parade. Like most busy households, it took a couple of trips to town to get everyone where they were supposed to be on time. The family was seated towards the end of the parade route and since Lilly didn’t have any competition for the candy that was thrown, she has a good supply to last her until Halloween. It was a chilly day, but the parade was enjoyable.
The ride to the Burkett home after the parade, although short, was filled with laughter, which is always a good sound for the old folks! It’s not easy filling a van with four adults, three kids, a dog, and all the stuff they needed for the parade. It was much more fun to be one of the old people, and the day evoked memories of how we all did the same thing when our kids were small, those many, many years ago. After leaving the Burketts’, Jean, Phil and Toni travelled the back roads and stopped for a surprise visit at the home of Sarah Roberts, Corey Bradley and Camden, who live in Earlham. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

Blankets for Love: See the blanket display in the Fellowship Hall for “Blanket the World with Love.” For more than 60 years, Church World Service has worked in partnership with local communities to identify their needs and access the resources they need to build the foundation for a more viable future, including blankets, tents, food and other emergency supplies in the wake of a disaster; tools and seeds for refugees returning home to replant their fields; wells for families living in drought prone areas to provide clean, safe water to drink and to irrigate crops and gardens; literacy training; and microcredit for women struggling to realize their potential. The blanket will be on display for your donations for a few Sundays.
Holiday greenery sale: The THUG group will be selling greenery for the next few weeks. Contact Angela Abbas for further information, or call the church office.
Lots of Socks & More: The sixth “Lots of Socks Drive” is under way. New socks, underwear, diapers and pull-ups can be put in the collection box located in the church from Oct. 7 – 31.
Choir cantata: The choir has started to practice for its Christmas cantata. Anyone who wishes to sing can join the choir at 7:30 on Wednesday. The last half of choir practice will be for the cantata
